Information Technology Specialist (Computer Specialist)

This position is physically located in the Dallas Fort Worth area but reports to the Network Management Branch, Information, Policy and Public Affairs Division, Central Office. The position supports the consolidated operations of the Designations and Sentence Computation Center, the Field Acquisitions Office, and the Consolidated Employee Services Branch in addition to responsibilities of the Network Management Branch. The mission of the section is to provide planning and development of the BOPNet network based operating systems that will support the mission critical functions of the Bureau of Prisons. The purpose of the position is to carry out the activities related to the development of these network-based systems. A major portion of the incumbent's responsibility includes developing, implementing, and maintaining the Bureau's BOPNet systems. The systems, which will be under the responsibility of this section, include the Novell Network Operating System (NOS), Microsoft Network Operating Systems (NT/2000 Server), Novell GroupWise, BOP SMTP mail servers, BOP Internet Firewall Systems, BOPNet administrative file servers and any operational computer system that use platforms other than mainframe computer systems. These systems support the line and management staff in the Federal Bureau of Prisons, which currently consists of more than 30,000 employees nationwide in more than 100 institutions and offices. Education:
There is no substitution of education for specialized experience at this grade level. OR
Experience:
You have IT related experience demonstrating each of the four competencies listed below. Attention to detail - Is thorough when performing work and conscientious about attending to detail. Experience:
You must have one year of specialized experience at the next lower GS-grade (or equivalent). Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies/knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position and is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Such experience is typically gained in the IT field or through the performance of work where the primary concern is IT. Some examples of this qualifying experience are:
Experience in programming, analyzing techniques and computer networking to serve as a system monitor or trouble- shooter when this involves devising recovery plans for system failures. Experience training or teaching users of all ability levels to use computer programs. Experience providing guidance on the purchase of computer hardware and software, as it relates to support and compatibility requirements established by the agency. Experience in computer techniques, requirements, and methods sufficient to develop procedures and techniques to carry out audits of a variety of operational IT activities. Experience performing a variety of diagnostics and repairs on personal computers on all levels of software and equipment, using personal computer hardware allowing diagnosis and correction of most problems. Credit will be given for paid and unpaid experience. To receive proper credit, you must show the actual time (such as the number of hours worked per week) spent in activities. The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
